Sal Capone: The Lamentable Tragedy of - May 22-31st

urban ink productions and Black Theatre Workshop present the Vancouver premiere of Sal Capone: The Lamentable Tragedy of written by Montreal native and Vancouver resident Omari Newton and directed by Diane Roberts. This hip hop theatrical powerhouse follows a young hip hop group caught in the aftermath of a violent police shooting. It is a raw and honest portrayal of the ultimate consequences of cultural stereotyping. 

 

Sal Capone is a work of fiction, and was inspired by the loss of Fredy Villanueva, an unarmed youth, by police shooting five years ago in Montreal. Following the ensuing protest riot, the playwright was compelled to investigate the complex relationship between youth and police. Sal Capone adds an essential voice to this timely and relevant conversation. 

 

The collaboration between urban ink productions, Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre (Vancouver) and Black Theatre Workshop & Playwrights Workshop Montreal (Montreal) crosses cultural and provincial boundaries by bringing together a talented cast of actors from across the country including Letitia Brookes and Tristan D. Lalla (Montreal), Billy Merasty (Toronto) and Kim Villagante and Jordan Waunch (Vancouver).
