Long-time Co-op Radio host (One O'Clock Jump), George Jolly, has passed on. I just learned about it today.
George and Lloyd Davis (who passed in February 2020) would follow my All Over The Map show every third Sunday of the month on CFRO. We built a good friendship over the many years, hugs and back slaps, laughs aplenty. We'd swap a lot of stories, and mostly I'd be the listener as theirs stretched back longer. Jazz stories, Vancouver stories, memories of Hogan's Alley and the city's original black community.
Both men were good-hearted, born storytellers, a pleasure to listen to. George and I talked often of the Kansas City Monarchs, both of us owning team jackets, and George would often be wearing his Monarchs hat, which he's wearing in the photo below. All teams I coached in my baseball career were named Monarchs, in honour of the greats of black baseball, and George dug that.
I've missed George since health took him off hosting the regular One O'Clock Jump spot (which I took on). We talked on the phone a few times. He called me Youngblood. He called everybody Youngblood, a term of endearment. Despite his health challenges, George's spirit was always full, resonant, generous.
My heart goes out to George's wife, Judy, and to his family and many friends. Rest easy, George.
